N-scale, the Model Tracking of Choice

N-scale may very well be the most popular type of model railway tracking among hobbyists. It is certainly the most commonly seen at stores and conventions. But since the two are often confused, it must be explained that a gauge is not the same thing a scale. A gauge is the distance between rails which is always the same with every model with a the rails always being 9 mm apart. The scale is the ratio of the overall tracks to life size tracks which is usually a ratio of anywhere from 1:148 to 1:160. This measurement includes the height of the rails which differ from track to track.

Finding the Right Track For You

Because of the differentiation, not all train models will work well on any track. You must get a train size that perfectly matches the track size. That is why many stores will specialize in a relative size. For instance, there are stores that advertise they deal in the smaller track plans. All of these stories are staffed with people who are passionate about model training, and discussing about and toying with them. They will even assist with planning creative and effective layouts if you desire their expert assistance in this area.
